Handcrafted Earrings designed with Antique Openwork Brass Ball Buttons, Copper Danish Love Knots, and Jade Beads
I was able to acquire a set of seven Antique Brass Ball Buttons with lovely openwork design. They are extremely well made buttons with a nice thickness and strength. Judging by this, I imagine they adorned a jacket anywhere from early part of the last century to the 1930’s. The manufacturer had coated them with an orange-brown finish that I was able to buff off to reveal the golden brass original metal color. There is a photo here showing an original button with it’s metal shank and old finish to view.
To create these earrings, I topped the buttons with a flattened and curved fancy metal button as a cap. Then, two handmade copper Danish Love Knots are placed on top of each other, and finally a lovely green jade bead finishes the design.
Danish Love Knots are made with three coils of thin copper wire mysteriously intertwined together. I say mysteriously because it was quite the puzzle getting them right but perseverance pays off! The Love Knots depict the strong connection of love of course. I gave the copper a rich patina.
The earring length is 1 1/4” .
The width at the widest point is 1/2”.
The French Hook ear wires are also handmade by me using 20 gauge gold filled wire. They have been strengthened in a tumbler and the little loops are soldered closed.
I provide a protective finish to the buttons and copper.
Thank you for your kind interest!
